Bristol Royal Infirmary

Bristol Royal Infirmary

  • Client - University Hospitals Bristol, NHS Trust
  • Project size - 490m²
  • Completion - 11 weeks
  • 6th Floor Rooftop Extension - Surgical Assessment Suite
  • 15 No. Consulting rooms, 9 No. Changing areas & Reception
  • Demolition & Removal of existing 6th Floor Structure
  • 'Optimo Self-Clean KS1000' Kingspan cladding
  • Factory-fitted Brise Soleil

Module-AR Limited were sub-contracted by Halsall Construction Ltd. to provide 16 No. modular units suitable for installing on the sixth floor of the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Before the installation of the Module-AR Limited structures could commence, Module-AR were firstly required to demolish and remove the existing corrugated, and asbestos-clad, structure on the sixth floor of the King Edward building.

Upon removal of the old structure, the 16 Module-AR bays, externally clad with 'Optimo Self-Clean KS1000' Kingspan, were then craned into position on top of the King Edward building and a linkway was erected to the existing building. The windows of the modules were fully hinged to permit cleaning from the inside and protective barriers were installed, along with a fall arrest system, for safe external maintenance of the structure.

Inside, the Bristol Royal Infirmary modular building is utilised as a Surgical Assessment Suite with 15 No. Consulting rooms, 9 No. Changing Areas, Reception rooms, a large Patient Waiting Area, Clean & Dirty Utility rooms and WC facilities. Factory-fitted brise soleil was installed to maximise sustainability, reduce sun glare and optimise natural light into the building. Due to the site being in the centre of the city of Bristol, construction site space was minimal. Alongside this, the modules were to be delivered on top of a busy hospital so minimising site disturbance was essential. The 16 No. modules were craned into position over 2 days without ever blocking the emergency entrance into the hospital and causing minimal disruption to the Hospital's daily activities.

In total the project was designed, manufactured and installed in less than 11 weeks which allowed the hospital to utilise the facility up to 50% sooner than if the building was constructed traditionally.

Ramsay Healthcare - CSSD Facility Berkshire

Ramsay Healthcare - CSSD Facility Berkshire

  • Client - Ramsay Healthcare UK
  • Location - The Berkshire Independent Hospital
  • Project size - 145m²
  • Completion - 16 weeks
  • CSSD Facility
  • Autoclaves room, Load room, IAP room, Wash room, Clean Dispatch room and more

The Berkshire Independent Hospital is one of Berkshire's leading private hospitals with an excellent reputation for delivering high quality healthcare treatments and services. The hospital, built in 1993, has 52 individual patient rooms and 9 twin bedded rooms all with en-suite facilities. By investing in advanced medical technology, the hospital offers a wide range of treatments and services. The 3 No. fully equipped theatres with a 7 bed recovery area are particularly suitable for orthopaedic procedures offered, such as arthroscopy, hip and knee replacement. A dedicated day surgery suite is suitable for minor surgery and endoscopy. Berkshire Independent Hospital required an extra building for their new CSSD Facility and Module-AR Limited were awarded the contract to provide a 6 No. module single storey structure.

With Plastisol (plastic coated steel) external cladding, plinths & fascia and UPVC windows the building is not as exciting externally as some of our other projects. However, internally the building features extremely scientific and technical equipment which makes it a very useful building to the Hospital.

An external canopy was installed to the entrance of the building which opens into a Reception. Alongside this is an Autoclaves room, used to sterilise medical equipment, a Load room, Immunisation Accelerator Programme room, Wash room, Clean Dispatch room, File Store room, Changing rooms, Cleaner room, Plant room and a large Corridor with a roof lights to improve natural lighting. The corridor also links the modular structure to the existing Hospital building. Acoustic door seals were fitted to each internal door and suspended ceilings were installed throughout.

In total the project was completed in 20 weeks with just 1 day, and a 250 tonne crane, needed to deliver the modules which was greatly appreciated by the hospital due to the lack of site disturbance.

Words from the client

Feedback from Andy Holt, Project Manager on behalf of Berkshire Independent Hospital, stated that Module-AR Limited's standard of workmanship, site supervision & organisation, adherence to contract programme, relationship with the contractors and attitude to claims, rates, measurements & settlement of accounts were all very good, the contract was carried out to the hospital's satisfaction and they would happily employ Module-AR Limited again.

Ramsay Healthcare - Sawbridgeworth

  • Client - Ramsay Healthcare UK
  • Location - Sawbridgeworth
  • Project size - 108m²
  • Completion - 12 weeks
  • CSSD Equipment Store & Transfer Lobby
  • Rivers Private Hospital, Sawbridgeworth

Ramsay Healthcare UK is a leading provider of independent Hospitals in England, with a network of 22 acute facilities. The Ramsay Healthcare Rivers Hospital is located just off the M11 and is easily accessible from London and the Home Counties. The Hospital opened in 1992 and is equipped with the latest medical facilities for diagnosis and treatment, and has very high quality clinical standards including effective infection prevention measures. Rivers Hospital, Sawbridgeworth, has 4 fully equipped theatres for cutting edge surgery and a new day surgery suite for minor surgery. Module-AR Limited were awarded the task of designing, manufacturing and installing a single modular bay to be utilised as a CSSD Equipment Store.

Module-AR Limited worked closely with the clients' Project Manager and Architect to provide high quality working environments for Consultants and staff, similar to those already provided within the existing hospitals. The building consisted of a CSSD Equipment Store room and a Transfer Lobby with 3 No. digital keypads for security. Polyflor vinyl flooring was installed for an easy to clean, robust & hard wearing surface and the floor loading throughout was 3.5kN/m².

HTM compliant sanitary ware was installed along with upgraded acoustic seals around all internal doors and partitions to minimise sound transference between rooms. A wet heating system linked through to the main Hospital via pipework-fed low surface temperature radiators. Both the waiting room and reception were land locked and so to provide natural light and ventilation Velux Ventilated roof lights were installed.

The external walls were clad in Plastisol (plastic coated steel) for a robust and maintenance-free exterior. The module itself was lifted in to position using a 150t all-terrain crane due to the location of the structure.

Just 1 day was required for Module-AR Limited to deliver and install the module on site and 12 weeks to fully complete the project, greatly reducing site traffic & disturbance to the existing hospital buildings compared to traditional construction methods.
