As part of an initiative by the Royal Borough of Greenwich Council to provide new opportunities for residents to access training & work in sectors with excellent job prospects, Module-AR Limited won a contract to provide the fifth local skills centre in Kidbrooke, Greenwich. The recently completed Kidbrooke Skills Centre delivers specific courses in construction - from theory based training to short courses in a large range of subjects. For example:

  • Kerb laying
  • Drain laying
  • Traffic marshalling
  • Manual handling

The structure consists of 8 No. modules manufactured with external factory installed Brickslip cladding and plinths to match the existing adjacent traditionally built pharmacy. An entrance canopy was installed alongside Secured by Design windows and external doors.

Kidbrooke Skills Centre consists of 2 No. Classrooms (each over 60m²), a Kitchen/Break-out area, an Administration Office, WC's and a Lobby. A superior than standard 5kN/m² floor loading, suspended ceilings, air conditioning, interactive whiteboards, shelving units, Hat & Coat hooks and pin boards were also fitted to ensure the interior was robust enough for the construction training, yet remaining a stylish and modern teaching facility.

In total the project was designed, manufactured and installed in just 8 weeks, allowing the local residents of Kidbrooke to benefit from using this facility to develop their skillsets.

Words from the client

Colin Middleton, Skills Commissioning Officer at the Royal Borough of Greenwich, stated that Module-AR Limited's advice, technical expertise, communication, skills & performance of the pre-contract team, value for money, health & safety and costs were very good and commented on the structure: "Kidbrooke Skills Centre is an excellent modular building, which despite its use as a construction skills centre has stood the test of time."

Alongside this reference from Colin, Councillor Sizwe James, the Royal Borough's Cabinet Member for Business, Employment and Skills comments regarding Kidbrooke Skills Centre: "This is a fantastic facility and a great addition to our set of specialist skills and training centres across the Borough. Together they offer hundreds of places on specialist courses in industries we know people have an excellent chance of securing long term employment in. This is all about creating as many opportunities as possible for our residents to access training and valuable experience which will lead to permanent jobs, and is a key strand of our anti-poverty work. I wish all the new recruits the very best for the future and know they'll get an excellent grounding from the Greenwich Community College trainers. We know that with our ambitious programme of regeneration and development, that there are a lot of local jobs available in Construction – and this helps to ensure our own residents can access that work".
