Barnfield College, Bedfordshire
Barnfield College is the largest college in Bedfordshire, with state-of-the-art facilities across four campuses. They recently became the first further education college to be designated a National Learning and Skills Beacon.
Owing to the closure of one of the Barnfield College sites for redevelopment, a number of teaching disciplines had to be relocated to the New Bedford Road Campus. This meant the college needed to provide a further fifteen classrooms along with administration areas, storage and toilet facilities. The College’s additional accommodation needs were required urgently and it was important for the new facility to be installed, complete and ready for occupation for the students in the new September term.
Module-AR were selected through a competitive tendering process carried out by the College and were awarded the contract. Due to a very tight programme and window of opportunity whilst the students were on there summer break work on site began within a couple of weeks of the award. The project was to provide a full turnkey package which included the design of foundations and due to the College’s preferred site location a comprehensive drainage and flood defense system. Traditional brickwork cladding and a tiled pitched roof were also provided within the full turnkey package. The majority of classrooms have been designed as standard teaching spaces for up to 30 students and include interactive white boards with overhead projectors. One large class area of 88m2 has been provided to cater for specialist Hair, Beauty and Holistic Therapy training classes for students. All rooms were installed with Heat & Cool Air-Conditioning and the College was keen to create additional natural light to the 74m long central corridor and requested the installation of sun pipes which worked extremely well.
From receipt of the order, design, manufacture, installation and completion on site of 1250m2 took an amazing 18 weeks.
